I know that, nowadays, many bands are substituting a band website with a Facebook, MySpace, or Reverbnation page. While it is pretty much necessary to have a social networking page in today’s music environment, there are still some valuable merits to having your own individual website dedicated solely to your band.
1. Having a website gives you a chance to pull all of your social networking pages together in one location. This makes it much easier for your fans to find your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.
2. Having your own website allows you to customize your bands image as you see fit. Let’s face it; social networks really limit how creative you can be with your profile. Having a band website allows you to be as creative as you want.
3. Your bands website shows that you are serious. It’s easy to create social networking pages, but a website dedicated to your band, that shows an extra dedication. Labels like to see that!
4. Social networking pages are full of ads and distractions. A fan may come to your page, end up clicking on an ad and then leaving your page. These ads often promote other bands that you are competing with. Having your own website commands your viewer’s attention.
5. Your website can be used as a tool to sell your music. Having a website makes it easy for your fans to find your music on stores like iTunes & Amazon.
6. Having a domain/url with your bands name makes you look much more professional.
7. Having a website allows you to get people to sign up for your bands newsletter, thus allowing you to have more interaction with your fans. Newsletter companies, like Constant Contact and Campaigner, give you free newsletter sign up tools that you can imbed on your website.
8. Social networks are not forever. Trends change rapidly online and what may be a popular social network today, may fade and be less important, or even non-existent, tomorrow. Look at Myspace; they were the power house of social networks just a few months ago, and now they play runner up to sites like Facebook and Twitter. Having your own website allows you to easily transition to where your fans are.
